Week 11 - Teacher-Student Rapport

Just a reminder that we do have class next Tuesday, April 27th. Please check your syllabus to remind you what you need to bring.  If you have not already turned in your foliotek receipt and signed disposition, please bring to class next week.


I believe that the art of teaching is shown in the teacher's ability to have a positive rapport with students.  According to Webster's Dictionary, the word rapport means "relation; connection, esp. harmonious or sympathetic relation: a teacher trying to establish close rapport with."  Hopefully, your cooperating teacher has a good rapport with the students.  Watch your cooperating teacher this week in order to answer the following questions:

What strategies does the teacher use to build and maintain rapport with students?  How are opportunities for success provided for each student?  Do the students have a positive connection with the teacher?

  1. The teacher I am observing has a very positive rapport with her students. SHe begins the class with an 'elbow five', because of germs of course, and asks a few students each day a specific event she knows of in their life. anything from how is their new puppy, to are you still enjoying t-ball. This I htink shows the students that she cares about them as an individual and makes it easier for them to ask questions, and eggar to learn and pay attention. This keeps a positive connection with the teacher.

  2. The teacher I am observing is awesome! She is very positive all of the time. One way I think that the girls in the choir really connect with her her is that sometimes she will sing the part for them and she has a great voice and it really inspires the girls to try hard. With the guys the connection with her singing it isn't as strong since shes a soprano, but usually it gets to them a little. Another way she connects with them is on Mondays she always wants to hear stories from the weekend. She most definitely has a positive rapport with her students.

    I think the elbow five is a cool thing to do. I had a teacher in high school who did High Five Fridays. No one could leave at the end of the hour on Fridays without a high five. It did really showed us that he cared about us. Sometimes if you ever sneaked out without getting one and he noticed he would chase you down the hallway. He was easily one of my favorite teachers in high school.

  4. My teacher I guess you could say acts young and the students can relate to her. She provides opportunities for the students to talk about other things than Spanish the whole hour and students participate while she also participates (in a constructive way).

    I think that is absolutely fabulous that her class does an "elbow five" I've never actually done an elbow five, but I hope to in the future, haha.

  6. The teacher I observed has a really good rapport with her students. Everyday they have carpet time and for 20 minutes they can talk about anything they want. She is always sincere in how she responds to them when they tell a story. Whenever they have a birthday she stands by the door and when she sees the child coming down the hall she yells really loud. Happy Birthday! and their name. It echos down the hallway. She does a lot of fun stuff. During Dr. Seuss week she bought all of them really big crazy sunglasses and the were aloud to wear them all day. At the end of the day she stands by the door and asks for one of the three or all of the above, handshake, high five, or a hug. They absolutely adore her.

  8. The teacher I am observing has a positive attitude towards her students. She is compassionate and honestly cares about her students. Unfortunately, some of the girls don't respect her as much as they should. She is an older lady, so these teens don't really think that she knows what she is talking about. Most students are respectful and treat her well, but there are always some who don't. The teacher is accepting of this fact becasue she learned a long time ago that she will not always please everyone, and that she cannot take it personally.

  10. My teacher has a great connection with his students! The kids all love him and even go to other teachers telling them all the cool stuff my teacher does. He makes them laugh all the time and jokes around with him. He can get serious when he's mad about something or itf it's a serious issue, and the kids know when he is being serious. I really love the connection he has with the kids!

  12. The teachers that I observed had an amazing connection with the students. I observed a pre-school classroom, and there was two teachers always in the classroom with the students. In the afternoon, the teachers would switch. Clearly, I think the teachers in the morning gave the students more opportunities to succeed because that's where most of their learning was acquired, and then in the afternoon the students took part in arts and craft. The teachers always had a positive attitude with the students. I am not a very big fan of switching teachers in the middle of the day, but it worked for these students and they always went home telling what they learned that day.

    I think it's wonderful that your teacher is so creative with the children, and it is really neat that she can make them feel special on their birthday. I think that the students will always remember her because of the personal connection that the teacher has with them.

  14. My teacher has a very good rapport with all of her students. She always asks them how things are going and they are always wanting to know more about her also. She relates with them because she has kids the same age as the ones she teaches and they love her stories about her boys. Sometimes the class will get off topic sharing different stories, but I think its not always a bad thing because this allows the teacher and class to relate, which is exactly how my observing class is.

    I feel the same way about my teacher. She has a positive, fun and respectful relationship with the kids. She lets them know on a daily basis she is proud of them and all that they have learned. She gives high fives too when she is happy or congratulating them. I believe this is probably the most important aspects of being a teacher. Having fun with the kids so they know that you are not just a teacher, but a great person!

  18. The teacher I'm observing does have a good rapport with her students. The teacher asks each child a question pertaining to their personal life to show she cares. If a child looks ill, she will ask them if they are feeling alright and what is wrong or what can she do to help. The other day, one of the girls in her class returned from a week long trip to Hawaii, and the teacher asked her how it was and if she had a good time.
    Opportunities for success are provided for each student because the teacher is very observant if one of her students is struggling with a certain concept, and she either talks to them after class or walks up to them during class to ask if they need any help or to remind them that she is there if they need any extra help.
    I think the students definitely have a positive connection with the teacher. They always say hi to her and they seem to love her class. They never really complain about anything, and they even get excited about some of the activities she has them complete. The thing I really notice is that they always say goodbye to her and that they'll see her soon. When I was in school, none of us did that. I think this is just one way to show the positive connection between the teacher and her students.

  20. One of the teaches I've observed definitely has a good rapport with her class. Just walking into the classroom you can tell that the kids have a fun time in there and come up before and after class to talk to her. On Mondays she has them journal about their weekends and then chooses a few to come up and read their journal to the class. She always seems to take a sincere interest in what they did and I think the kids pick up on that because they seem to absolutely love her.

    I think it is easier for kids to relate to younger teachers sometimes and consider their class more fun because they seem to have more energy a lot of the time. That's great though that she still shows she cares about them even if they don't fully appreciate it.

  22. The teacher I am observing has a good rapport with her students. Every week she picks a new student and has a student of the week. This student gets to make a posterboard that she provides for them and gets to put on there some of there favorites. The student then explains to the class and teacher why they have these favorites. I think this is a good way to have a connection with your students becasue you get to know them on a personal level and learn about them outside of school work. It shows her students she cares what there intrests and hobbies are.

    I think its great that the teacher takes time out of there day to ask how the kids are doing that day and how is life outside of school.I think it means a lot to kids when teachers are asking them questions beside whats going on in class. The student will be able to have a conection with that teacher and will be able to mst likely go to them about anything if they need advice or anything else that may be bothering them. Its great that your teacher does that for her class!

  24. The teacher that I observed was really close with her class. She always knew what was going on in their lives and asked questions about what she knew. The students in her advanced AE class were allowed to share things like the music they enjoyed with the teacher and get her opinion.

My teacher lets the students be creative and lets them ask questions that they could wonder about that may be a little off track of what she is talking about but then she always relates it back to what she is teaching. She also asks students if there is anything wrong (in private) if she notices that they aren't their usual self.

The teacher I am observing is in a very small school district that only includes the elementary school, middle school, and high school; this means that many of the teachers have their students for more than just one year. The teacher I am observing has actually had 14 of the 25 in his class for the past 2 years. I really like that he is so well acquainted with the students and their parents. He knows their personalities very well and he knows how they learn individually. He has created a series of card games to help some with math, he has different exercises to help others with whatever they need help with. I hope to be as close to my students as he is with his.

  31. My teacher has individual relationships with all her students. The class is very hands on and learning out loud so she knows her students strengths and weaknesses. If she thinks a student is capable of doing something she may call on them, if she knows that some of her students struggle she help give them a little more attention. Often especially females come to her after class with personal issues they wish to explain. Sometimes they feel more comfortable talking to her then the counselor.

  32. My teacher has a really good relation with the children, not as a friend (because they are too young...4 and 5 years old) but more as a role model who can teach you and be there for you... She is respectful and nice with the students. when a student doesn't participate or has difficulties, she tries to help him/her by moving his/her seating and encourage each student when they progress.

    my teacher has a daily activity that she does everyday to start off class...she always greets the students in whatever foreign language class they are taking (spanish or french). They know they cannot not come in w/o greeting her...its kinda fun to watch b/c the students enjoy it.

    even if my teacher teach small kids, I feel like yours work in the same manner than mine...know well their students, paying attention to them and the students can feel it, they feel comfortable with this kind of teachers...I think that if the teacher stays professional, we should have more teachers like that.

  35. My teacher is a high school teacher, so he relates to his students in a mature way. He does not count students tardy if they come in late and the students appreciate it. He does not treat them like children because then the students would not treat him with respect. At the high school age I think it is harder for a teacher to have good rapport with their students than elementary age. A lot of students in high school are not motivated to do their work or learn or just don't want to be at school, so it is hard to establish a connection with students that don't care. I think my teacher is youthful though and does relate. He shows you tube clips that relate to class and the students really enjoy it.

  36. My teacher has a great relationship with all of his students. If someone even seems to look hurt in the PE class he even make sure that they are okay and continue playing. I think it is a great idea to have a connection with your students. It shows that you care and that you have respect for each individual. In the long run, they will respect you too.

  38. My teacher always gives the students to excell. He is always asking them questions to get them in the class descustions and he never puts anyone down. He says hi to all the students as they walk through the door and is always willing to stop and help someone struggling behind.

  40. My teacher builds a rapport with her students by joking around with them and having fun but still making sure that the learning is serious and that the students aren't just there goofing off.

  42. My teacher has a great rapport with her students. She has a very relaxed yet well-managed class. She does not stand over their backs and critique every move they make. She also rewards them frequently for positive behavior. She is a great teacher. She makes sure to great each and everyone , and also gives time each week for each student to tell what's going on in their life. It makes her more aware of what her students enjoy, and special circumstances she may need to consider.
